AQUATICS MANAGER
TOWN OF WESTWOOD
The Town of Westwood seeks a qualified aquatic professional to manage all aspects of the Westwood aquatics facility and programs. The Aquatics Manager is a hands-on leader who plays an active role in the daily operation of the facility while supervising staff, overseeing programs, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all users. Working closely with two Assistant Aquatics Managers and a team of seasonal staff and volunteers, the Aquatics Manager is expected to lead by example, foster a positive team culture, and actively contribute to the day-to-day work required to operate a busy year-round aquatic facility.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative and service-oriented professional who is equally comfortable teaching a swim lesson, troubleshooting a facility issue, coaching staff through a difficult situation, or developing long-term plans for the aquatics program.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
• Provides overall leadership and management of the Town's aquatics facility, programs, services, and staff.
• Works alongside staff in the daily operation of the facility, assisting with pool maintenance, facility oversight, program delivery, customer service, and other operational needs.
• Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates employees while fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and excellent customer service.
• Develops, implements, oversees, and actively participates in aquatics programming, including swim lessons, specialty programs, and winter and summer swim teams.
• Teaches swim lessons, certification courses, and other aquatics programs as needed to support program operations.
• Collaborates with Recreation Department staff to develop and deliver programs, special events, and community initiatives.
• Participates in community events and outreach activities, including Westwood Day and other Recreation Department programs.
• Oversees and participates in pool maintenance activities, including water chemistry testing, facility inspections, filtration systems maintenance, equipment monitoring, cleanliness, and compliance with all applicable regulations governing public swimming pools.
• Oversees facility scheduling, rentals, and contracted services to maximize community access and operational efficiency.
• Develops and administers operating budgets, revolving fund projections, and capital improvement projects in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Recreation.
• Monitors revenues, expenditures, participation trends, and program performance; prepares reports and recommendations to support decision-making.
• Maintains required records, permits, inspections, certifications, and operational documentation.
• Builds and maintains positive relationships with participants, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners; responds to concerns and resolves issues in a timely and professional manner.
• Represents the Recreation Department at community events, public meetings, and professional organizations.
• Maintains current knowledge of aquatics industry standards, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
• Nights and weekends required.
Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Education, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in aquatics, recreation, or a related field, including at least two (2) years of supervisory or lead staff experience.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
• Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining aquatic facilities, including knowledge of pool systems, water chemistry, safety practices, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience teaching swim lessons, coaching aquatic programs, or delivering aquatics instruction.
• Demonstrated success leading, motivating, training, and developing employees in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, customer service, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team and contribute directly to daily operations while balancing broader management responsibilities.
• Strong organizational, administrative, and budget management skills.
• Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
Special Requirements/Certifications:
• Current Water Safety Instructor Certification.
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
• First Aid Certification.
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license.
